Social housing in Lviv
The project proposes a model of social housing as a supportive living environment for people with diverse backgrounds — including internally displaced persons, veterans, patients of rehabilitation programs, and other vulnerable groups. At its core, the project shifts the focus from housing typologies to the individual and their need to regain stability, safety, and a sense of belonging.
Concept
We approach housing as an environment where different life experiences coexist and interact, gradually forming a new sense of community.
The architecture supports this through a system of spaces with varying degrees of openness — from private to public. Everyday interactions, shared areas, and spatial transitions become the foundation of life within the neighborhood.
This approach goes beyond providing housing, creating conditions for social integration.
Context
The site is located in the northern part of Lviv, within a rapidly developing area that already combines different housing types and social groups. Its proximity to green areas and forest parks forms an important ecological framework.
The project integrates into this context by working with the landscape, green connections, and pedestrian flows.
Spatial structure
The neighborhood is organized as a system of interconnected spaces:
● district level — public functions and a community center that engage the wider area● neighborhood level — internal courtyards and shared spaces for interaction and everyday use● building level — semi-private zones, terraces, and spaces for daily encounters
This gradient allows residents to choose their level of engagement — from privacy to community.
Housing and community
The project offers a range of housing types that can adapt to changing needs over time. Ground floors include residential units with direct access to streets or green spaces, introducing a more domestic and human scale.
Local initiatives and shared use of space play a key role in shaping the identity of the neighborhood.
Sustainability
The project is based on the use of local and circular materials and incorporates low-carbon construction approaches.
Key strategies include:
● rainwater management and permeable surfaces● support for biodiversity● climate adaptation measures● economic feasibility in construction and maintenance
Approach
The project frames social housing not as a fixed typology, but as part of a broader spatial, social, and economic system. Its aim is not only to provide housing, but to create conditions for rebuilding everyday life.
