The symposium “Rebuilding a Place to Call Home: Resilient Cities & Regenerative Neighbourhoods” took place.
Two days of discussions on the future of Ukrainian cities, social justice, housing, urban resilience, and planning in times of war.
The Rebuilding a Place to Call Home: Resilient Cities & Regenerative Neighbourhoods symposium brought together researchers, architects, urban planners, and practitioners, including Ro3kvit representatives Fulco Treffers and Lilet Breddels.
In his closing remarks, Fulco Treffers reflected on utopian thinking and its role in planning Ukraine’s future, drawing on the ideas of Thomas More and Ernst Bloch.
Amid prolonged war and uncertainty, the ability to imagine a better future becomes a necessity. Utopian thinking allows us to look beyond present constraints and articulate the changes we want to achieve. It does not replace evidence-based planning but complements it, helping us explore different scenarios and make decisions even when reliable forecasts are unavailable.
“Utopian thinking in Ukraine does not stop with dreaming. Here, we see dreaming turning into action,” — Fulco Treffers.
The symposium programme was organised around four thematic tracks, led by:
- Elena Archipovaite — Social dimension of resilience: justice throughout recovery
- Anna Kuzyshyn and Anastasiia Popovych — Comprehensive picture of urban resilience
- Nataliia Mysak and Kateryna Malaia — Spatialising justice amid wartime transformations
- Ruta Leitanaite, Martynas Marozas and Oleksandr Anisimov — Holistic renovation of socialist-era districts and housing
The organising team will prepare a report bringing together the main findings, insights, and outcomes of the discussions. This year, contributions from symposium speakers will also be published in a special issue of a new journal by the Ukrainian Catholic University.
In the meantime, recordings of the symposium are available on the Kharkiv School of Architecture’s YouTube channel.
